KD Turkey Fund Helps Needy Residents At Swissvale Food Pantry

SWISSVALE (KDKA) -- The KDKA-TV Turkey Fund is heading into the home stretch, and every dollar will help those in need put food on the table this holiday season.

The final food giveaway before Thanksgiving is always a busy time at the Swissvale Food Pantry. This is a time when needy residents are thankful for all of those who donated to the KDKA-TV Turkey Fund.

Food pantry coordinator Nelson Kirksey says clients receive turkey vouchers for their neighborhood Giant Eagle.

"Those that give to the turkey fund recognize a need," Kirksey said. "And they do the best they can with what they're able to do. So we appreciate it."

Many of those who have benefited from the food pantry over the years pay it forward by volunteering at the food pantry. Ed Rothrauff of Swissvale is one of those volunteers. He's been handing out food to those in need for ten years.

"It's good to receive, but it's good to give back," he said. "The generosity of the residents of Pittsburgh and the surrounding counties to help their Greater Community Food Bank and the KDKA Turkey Fund is so needed. It makes a big difference at the table."

It's a difference made by volunteers, and those who contribute to the Turkey Fund.

"They're actually at the table with us," Ed Rothrauff said, "through their generosity."
