Thousands Head To Airport Mindful Of Worldwide Travel Alert
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - As part of the U.S. State Department's worldwide travel alert, Americans are being urged to be vigilant and to be aware of their immediate surroundings.
Travelers at Pittsburgh International Airport are aware of the alert and are heeding the advice.
Tis the season for luggage, long lines and lots of security. Thousands of travelers are heading to Pittsburgh International Airport to reach their Thanksgiving destinations. Getting to "Grandma's" this Thanksgiving comes with an alert, after the increase in terror threats around the world.
"If they have to do it, I'm all for it. I want to be safe where I am in public you know, why not?" said John Zappala, who was heading to New Jersey.
"I feel comfortable. I do, and I feel safe, so I think we'll be okay," said Judy Smith, as she prepared to leave to visit her daughter in Chicago.
The alert urges Americans to be vigilant in public places and when using public transportation. You should also avoid large crowds and crowded places and exercise caution during the holiday season and holiday festivities.
The Ryan family of from Morgantown, West Virginia, knew about the travel alert, but say they're taking it in stride as they get ready to leave for a long weekend in Chicago.
"We just prepared to leave early and got the kids ready early so we could get here to prepare for the long lines," said Mary Ryan.
"There's certainly a concern," said Mark Ryan. "But, we're going to keep living and go on our little vacation."
TSA agents at Pittsburgh international Airport are assisting travelers from directing them to where they need to go, to checking out suspicious items in luggage or any strange activity at the airport.
Passengers are strongly encouraged to get to the airport two hours before their flights depart.
