Investigation Underway After Puppies Found Burned, With Eyes Super-Glued Shut

YUKON, Pa. (KDKA) -- Meet Belle and Chloe. They are 8-week-old mastiff-lab mixes fighting for their lives after someone did the unthinkable to them.

"Whoever did this they could have children of their own. How are they treating their children," Sarah Jo Smith said.

Smith is the kennel manager of the Pet Adoption League in Yukon, Westmoreland County. She's taken them under her wing.

"We got a phone call Monday evening stating that two puppies were being abused. Can we take them in," Smith said.

The puppies were picked up in a blue bin outside of a beer distributor off of 136 in Hutchinson.

"We brought them in and put warm compresses on their eyes," Smith said.

Both puppies had their eyes super-glued shut. The vet that checked them out said it looked like they were burned with a lighter. Chloe's back leg is weak from being malnourished so she limps right now. Her leg should get stronger as she gains weight. As for Belle, she might lose her left eye.

"Her one little eye is still glued shut. They haven't gotten that one open yet. The vet's thinking she may lose this eye," Smith said.

The pups also had worms and were sick from drinking dirty water. They each weighed just four pounds.

"It's not like it's a mean animal that bit them or something. It's a baby, you know? How can you do that? That just makes your heart hurt," Smith said.

Smith says they've been getting a lot of tips into their office so they have an idea who the puppies owner might be.

An investigation is underway and the person responsible for doing this could face charges. After the puppies are nursed back to health, they will be put up for adoption.
