Furry Tails: Orange Cat Collar Project

The makers of the new and growing-in-popularity crowdfunded card game, "Exploding Kittens," are hoping a new and creative idea helps bring runaway cats back home to their families.

Call it "Orange Is the New Cat," or what about "A Catwork Orange;" but seriously, "Orange you glad I didn't say cat again?"

Okay, so, I couldn't help myself there!

But in all seriousness, this actually is a really inventive idea with the potential to get a lot of lost pets back home. It's being called "The Kitty Convict Project."

Did you know that in the United States, more than seven million pets go missing every year.

Of them, according to "The Kitty Convict Project," 26 percent of dogs are reported and eventually returned home because most of them already wear collars, but when it comes to lost cats; it's less than five percent.

Those statistics have the makers of "Exploding Kittens" wanting to do something about the disparity.

Their idea is simple.

If your pet is an indoor cat, put an orange collar on him or her. Then, should your kitty ever escape, he or she will be easily identifiable as a cat that should not be outside.

But it's a two-way street, and "The Kitty Convict Project" is trying to get out the word so people of the world know that if they "see a cat running around wearing orange," they know that it doesn't belong in the great outdoors.

So, why orange?

"The Kitty Convict Project" says the color is "bright" and "reflective," and it "brands your indoor cat as a convict."

"The idea here is that we turn more lost cats into found cats. That we bump up that five percent to something a little less depressing. The idea is that we have fewer kitty funerals and more kitty birthdays," the website says.

"The Kitty Convict Project" is even selling, at a profit loss – according to them, customized orange pet ID collars with tags or embroidery.
