Two People Killed When Plane From Mercer County Crashes
CONNEAUT TOWNSHIP (KDKA/AP)- Two people are confirmed dead in a plane crash in Crawford County.
The crash happened Monday night in a field near Airport Road in Conneaut Township.
Crawford County Coroner Scott Schell now identifies the victims as 59-year-old Timothy Williams, of Burghill, Ohio, and 33-year-old Nathan Koontz, of Linesville.
Officials say their plane was flying from Greenville, Mercer County, to Linesville when the airport tower lost contact with it around 6:30 p.m.
A couple living on Airport Road in Conneaut Township called emergency responders.
"I was in the bedroom watching a movie and I heard a loud crash," said Trina Porter. "Lots of trees breaking and it sounded like a car crashing into the ravine." After she talked to her husband Don, Trina said "it was definitely a plane crash."
Schell says Williams was piloting the plane which crashed Monday evening near the Merrys-Pymatuning Airport in Conneaut Township.
Investigators previously said that one of the men flew to Greenville Municipal Airport 20 miles away and was flying a different plane back to the first airport when air traffic controllers lost contact with the plane about 6:20 p.m.
The plane's wreckage was found about three hours later.
Schell says the plane hit several trees and broke apart but didn't catch fire.
Autopsies were expected Wednesday.
The National Transportation Safety Board is also investigating.
