Parkway East To Close Sunday Ahead Of Greenfield Bridge Implosion
PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) - Interstate 376 east of Pittsburgh will close for five days starting Sunday so crews can implode and remove the Greenfield Bridge.
The bridge is more than 90 years old and carries traffic above the interstate which is locally known as the Parkway East.
It's been closed since October and is being replaced by a new span scheduled to open by May 2017.
The bridge will be brought down in a controlled implosion about 9 a.m. Monday. But crews must prepare for that, and then clean up the ruins of the bridge, so the interstate will close for five days beginning at 6 a.m. Sunday.
Interstate traffic will be detoured around the closure at the Forbes Avenue and Edgewood/Swissvale exits.
While no damage to homes is expected, the city would like the folks in the two houses closest to the bridge to leave during the implosion. Others nearby can stay, but not near windows.
The only public viewing point will be in Schenley Park near the skating rink, looking through the trees.
