Schenley Park Ice Rink Opens Despite Warm Temperatures

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - It may not feel like winter weather-wise, but there are signs of the season popping up all over the place.

One example is that the Schenley Park skating rink is now open for business.

With Christmas music playing in the background, the newly renovated skating rink is officially up and running.

"It's been a battle getting it started, but we finally succeeded and we do have ice and we do have a foundation and we're going," rink manager Mirella Ranallo said.

The rink opened later than usual this year because of all the unseasonably warm weather.

This week, temperatures are expected to remain in the high 50s and 60s.

It certainly doesn't feel like Pittsburgh winter, but even with that, the ice will be ok as long as there's not a ton of sun.

"If the sun is out and its above 45 degrees, the sun is fully out, it's hard to open. You have wet and soft ice, but if the sun is not out and its 50 degrees, even 60 degrees, we can skate," Ranallo said.

People were skating Tuesday evening, when the rink first opened.

In fact, more people showed up than expected with some were wearing T-shirts and shorts.

"I mean, come on, it's like 50, 60-something, why not?" Alexandra Janczewska said.

While some skaters say they are looking forward to colder temperatures and snow, others say they don't mind this type of winter at all.

There will be different events like family night and adults only skate all throughout the season.
