Unusually Warm Weather Makes For A Different Christmas Eve

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The unusually warm weather in Pittsburgh has made for a Christmas Eve that's a little different this year.

Alisha Seelye and her kids came Downtown from Lower Burrell only to find the ice rink at PPG Place had been closed because the warm weather keeps melting the ice.

"Warm temperatures really defeated us today," said Harry Datz, who says his crew has worked especially hard this winter dealing with the warmth. "The sun load and the warmth absolutely hurt us this morning."

Datz and his crew were able to reopen the rink around 6 p.m.

It was a Christmas Eve in Pittsburgh where you could take your kids to the park or go bicycling in shorts!

But the warm weather isn't helping Becky Pais from Point Breeze with her grandkids.

"They want to see snow! That's their dream. This is why they're here," said Pais.

You see, her grandkids Andrei and Mischa live in Maui and are here visiting. Mischa says she was looking forward to finally seeing snow, but Mother Nature isn't cooperating.

Things also looked a little different at Christmas Eve Mass at Saint Paul Cathedral in Oakland. Many people arrived without a jacket and the church doors were actually propped wide open to let air in.
