Magee-Womens Hospital Welcomes First Pittsburgh Baby Of 2016

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The first Pittsburgh baby of 2016 was born at Magee Hospital New Year's morning. He is one of the earliest New Year's babies in recent years.

Little Andrew entered the world at 12:05 a.m. Parents Erin Hamm and Michael Thomas say Pittsburgh's first baby of the year was actually a little bit late.

"We thought he was going to be the first December baby in my entire family," Erin said. "He had different plans."

"I was extremely surprised, because I knew we were going to be on the news and everything," the boy's father laughed.

The baby's instant fame was a complete surprise to his mom.

"I thought it was a joke. They were saying, 'You have a New Year's baby.' And I obviously thought, that's lovely," Erin said. "And they brought up a basket, the nurses at the nurse's station. And I thought, 'Oh, that's so nice.' And then somebody jokingly said, 'You're going to be on the news.' And I said, 'No, no I'm not.'"

She was wrong about that. But the newest member of the family takes it all in stride. After all, New Year's Day is the only day he knows.

Andrew's 2-year-old brother and 13-year-old sister, who was born Jan. 2, are excited to see him. However, there is a special request.

"His little brother says he's not going to play with his trucks," Andrew's father warned.

With his birthday coming so close to Christmas, will he miss out on presents?

"He does have some Christmas gifts at home," his mother says. "But his little brother opened some for him."
