Port Authority Officer Injured While Breaking Up Fight On Bus

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - The Port Authority transit officers were called to Smithfield Street and Sixth Avenue in downtown Pittsburgh, for the report of the fight on a Port Authority bus.

As officers were trying to break up the fight, one officer, accidentally, hit another in the face, with a baton.

The transit police were called downtown about 9:30 p.m. Monday, for a report of a fight on bus 3216.

"Some guy was drunk and pushed some other guy and then they started fighting, I guess, or one of the guys wanted to fight and then a lot of police pulled up and threw him to the ground," said a woman, who wished to remain anonymous. She was on the bus when the incident happened.

As officers tried to break up the fight, one of the transit officers accidentally hit another officer in the face, with a baton. The injured officer complained of blurred vision and was taken to Allegheny General Hospital.

A source tells KDKA, the officer wasn't seriously injured, but has a bump and bruise on his face.

"You think you'd be safe on a bus and then something breaks out and the police come and it gets even worse," said Donnie Franks, who often rides city buses. "I don't understand it."

Transit police report during the scuffle, a third person, 22-year-old Cody Lee, was also yelling and screaming. They say Lee refused orders to leave the area and had to be pushed away from the injured officer several times.

Police say Lee smelled of alcohol and had a small bag of marijuana.

Lee was arrested and taken to the Allegheny County Jail. The two people who were fighting, were also arrested.
