Port Authority Proposal Would Lower Fares For 2-Zone Riders

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- For the first time in 35 years, users of Pittsburgh's bus and trolley system could pay cheaper rates.

"If they dropped it down, I mean it would be a blessing to a lot of people," Jeffrey Gentile of Carrick said.

It would be a blessing, if the proposal goes through the Port Authority Board.

"Right now, we have two zones. If you were in Zone 2, you'd pay $3.75. On January 1 of 2017 if this passes, it will be $2.50 to ride," CEO of the Port Authority of Allegheny County Ellen McLean said.

The two zones would be gone if all goes through. There will just be one zone. The Port Authority says it will be a much more efficient system for users.

"We're pushing everyone to use our ConnectCard. It's faster boarding. Boarding will be pay on enter," McLean said.

If the Port Authority Board approves the proposal, ConnectCard will be the only method of payment on the trolley unless you purchase a ticket. No cash will be allowed. The bus is a different story. Users can still use cash, but if they do, they'll have to pay an additional 25 cents to ride.

"I think it will be huge for someone like myself. I'm torn between getting a monthly pass or a yearly pass," Jeff Duerr of Bethel Park said.

The fare will remain free for users of the T downtown and on the North Shore. However, that won't be the case anymore for bus riders within the vicinity of downtown.

Regardless, riders are ready for the change.

"I think it would really help out city of Pittsburgh and more riders come on trolley. A cheaper rate and now take the T," Gentile said.

The Port Authority will be holding two public meetings, then will present what they learned to the Port Authority Board. If all goes well, plans for the bus system will go into affect on January 1, 2017 and for the T on July 1, 2017.
