Sto-Rox High School Coach Accused Of Exchanging Inappropriate Messages With Students

McKEES ROCKS (KDKA/AP) -- He is an assistant basketball coach at Sto-Rox High School, but now he is suspended with pay.

KDKA is not identifying the coach, as he has not been charged.

Terry Decardo, the superintendent of the Sto-Rox school district, says the assistant coach has worked in the district for the 2015-16 season.

"He works directly with the students helping to run the practices and insure that they are ready to play varsity sports," said Decardo.

The assistant coach allegedly sent inappropriate sexual messages to several female students on social media. KDKA's Brenda Waters asked the superintendent if the coach allegedly had physical contact with any of the girls.

"I know that Allegheny County detectives are looking at all aspects. I can't say definitely whether there was any physical contact, but that is certainly why detectives are interviewing a number of girls, to assure that is not the case," Decardo said.

The superintendent says the assistant coach passed a background check.

Word got out about the alleged inapropriate postings when a teacher overheard a female student talking about them.

Superintrendent Decarbo says he read them, determined they were inappropriate and called Stowe Township Police, then called the assistant coach to tell him this:

"He is not to have any contact with the students, with any of the teachers or the coaches, no contact with any of the girls, do not go to any games, home or away, stay off Sto-Rox school property."

County police say no further details about the case will be released at this time.
