Local Woman Takes Initiative To Help Pittsburgh's Homeless
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Sometimes a small, kind gesture can make a huge difference in someone's life.
A Pittsburgh woman decided she didn't want to wait for someone else to take the first step to help Pittsburgh's homeless.
So, she did something about it.
Shanon Williams lives by a simple motto.
"Today's a good day to do something good," Williams said.
This weekend, she put those words into action and she asked some friends for help.
"I had an idea that I wanted to do something for the community to get the folks together to help some folks out. So, I put the word out and wanted to put together care packages and a bunch of people liked the idea and got together and here we are," she said.
They collected socks, shoes, clothes and even towels that could be bundled up and given to the homeless.
"I wanted to do something that anyone can do and everyone should know that if you want to do something that you can just do it. You don't have to look for the organization or the politician or the community leader to do it. You can do it," Williams said.
They used a facility called The Corner on Robinson Street as their place to organize and pack the items. Williams said the fact that so many people wanted to be involved made the job much easier.
"The turnout is so great that I didn't have to do much, but say that I wanted to do this thing. There are so many people that wanted to do something good that everyone came out and came out pushing really, really hard," she said.
Williams has a simple name for her project. It's called Take Care -- because that's what she thinks we need to do for each other.
"It's not just necessarily just about the care packages, but it's about out other community members because those who are without homes are also citizens of our community and we should be looking out for them just like we should be looking out for our neighbors," she said.
