Multiple Events Held Across City To Honor Martin Luther King Jr.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - People across the country are remembering the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.

In Pittsburgh, celebrations were held all throughout the weekend.

One such celebration was a day of song at the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary in East Liberty.

Between musical performances, there were scripture readings and readings of Dr. King's work.

Dr. David Garrow, a civil rights historian and professor of law and history at the University of Pittsburgh, spoke about King's accomplishments and challenges.

"1965, 1966 are a consistently painful time for Dr. King and for others because he realizes how strikingly incomplete the apparent victories of '64 and '65 really are," Dr. Garrow said.

This was the 32nd annual celebration at the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.

Donations raised went to the East End Cooperative Ministry.

In honor of Dr. King, two priests – Rev. David Taylor and Rev. Carmen D'Amico were recognized for their longtime support of the Race and Reconciliation Group, which is a faith-based organization dedicated to combating racism in the community.

Both Taylor and D'Amico talked about Dr. King's contributions to society and their own lives.

"He gave his life, he knew that if he would continue to speak, it would cost him his life," D'Amico said.

"On the day that Dr. King died, I was also working, while going to the university, a wonderful job that I would not have had if it wasn't for Dr. Martin Luther King," Taylor said.
