Dog Abandoned In Mobile Home After Fawn Twp. Shooting

FAWN TWP. (KDKA) - A dog that was supposedly shot was left sitting in its cage for days after a shooting in Fawn Township.

Police arrested 59-year-old Thomas Callen, Jr. on attempted homicide, animal cruelty, aggravated assault and reckless endangerment charges. Officers say he tried to shoot his girlfriend, but instead hit the dog in the head.

When the animal was finally rescued Friday, he was found dehydrated, but otherwise uninjured.

"It's certainly been a traumatic couple of days for the dog, being left in the house without anyone caring for him," said Western Pennsylvania Humane Officer Ed Mithchell described Charlie, a bulldog terrier mix.

Neighbor Bryan Atkinson says the animal has been in a cage inside a mobile home in Natrona Heights since Tuesday. Concerned neighbors called police, then the Humane Society and then Brenda Waters.

Both Thomas Callen, Jr. and his girlfriend were reportedly intoxicated and he allegedly told police he intended to shoot her, but missed, shooting the dog instead.

Neighbors say there was a lot of blood inside the mobile home. With Callen in jail and his girlfriend moved out, the allegedly injured dog was left inside the mobile home.

Humane Officer Mitchell arrived at the mobile home Friday afternoon to rescue Charlie.

Once back at the Humane Society, a veterinarian examined the dog, and suprisingly, found no injuries of any kind, except dehydration. The dog had not been shot.

State police told Brenda Waters they are trying to figure out what exactly happened here and where the blood came from.
