'Project Prom' Helping People Afford Milestone HS Event

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Project Prom is helping some local students get ready for the big dance with a special prom dress giveaway event.

A select group of students were invited to shop at Century III Mall on Thursday for their dresses and accessories before the big day.

"Prom is the quintessential high school event of the year for kids who have made it to their Junior and Senior year," said Ondrea Burton with the organization. "We want to make it affordable for kids to come and we don't want families to stress out over how to get their prom-bound students to the prom."

The Project Prom giveaway officially starts Saturday at 10 a.m. and runs for the next two weeks.

Project Prom started in 2003 to help local young men and women who otherwise might have missed out on the dance because of the cost.

How do you qualify? Burton explains: "Anybody that receives services from the Allegheny County Department of Human Services, whether it be the youth or anybody in their family.  Anyone that receives free or reduced lunch, or is eligible to receive free or reduced lunch."
