Events Planned To Mark Pittsburgh's Bicentennial

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Happy birthday, Pittsburgh!

Pittsburgh was incorporated as a city 200 years ago today.

The city has celebrations planned for all year long. But, today marks a big birthday bash at the City County Building and all around Downtown.

"We're going to have a 'Pop-up Pittsburgh,' meaning there will be about 20 to 30 different organizations throughout the city that will be showcasing their history in the city. We'll make it open to the public. We'll have cake because it is a birthday party and then, we'll celebrate at night with a gallery crawl all throughout the Cultural District," Mayor Bill Peduto said.

The cake and several other events will take place in the lobby of the City County Building between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. today.

Heinz History Center President and CEO Andy Masich joined the "KDKA Morning News" to talk about Pittsburgh's bicentennial.

"We're a little bit uncertain when Pittsburgh began," Masich said.

That's why you may remember a 250th anniversary back in 2008.

"Some people count from 1758 when Fort Pitt was founded...Now, in 1816 Pittsburgh was formally incorporated as a city. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania gave us a charter saying okay you're no longer the Borough of Pittsburgh you can be a city. So, that's what we're counting today," Masich said.
