Study: Getting Multiple Tattoos Can Prevent Colds

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A new study says that covering yourself with tattoos might prevent colds.

According to UA News, researchers at the University of Alabama found that receiving multiple tattoos can strengthen your immune system, making it easier to fight off common infections.

The study found that getting just one tattoo can make you more vulnerable to sickness, but adding more ink helps.

Dr. Christopher Lynn, UA associate professor of anthropology, explained that getting a tattoo is physically draining.

He likened the body's response to tattooing to going to the gym when you are out of shape. The first workout makes you sore, but that sensation fades after repeating the exercises.

"After the stress response, your body returns to an equilibrium," Lynn said. "However, if you continue to stress your body over and over again, instead of returning to the same set point, it adjusts its internal set points and moves higher."

Researchers worked with tattoo parlors to take saliva samples from customers. They found that a person's immune system response got stronger with each tattoo they received.
