Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta Moving Back To August

PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) - The Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta is moving back to the first weekend in August. Whether that's where it will remain, well, remains to be seen.

The regatta, now in its 39th year, used to be held in August until the city combined it with the Fourth of July festivities in 2004 as a way to save money on police and other crowd-control measures.

The regatta is moving back to Aug. 5-7 this year in order to gain give the city two major outdoor summer festivals.

The Fourth of July celebration will now be a daylong event capped with fireworks at Point State Park.

"The City of Pittsburgh is ever changing and we want to compliment this evolution," said Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta Board Chairman, John Bonassi. "This year's Regatta is certain to be a renewed summer classic."

"Both the EQT Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta and the July 4 EQT Flashes of Freedom Fireworks are signature initiatives for us," said Natalie Cox, Corporate Director of Communications, EQT Corporation. "We are thrilled to be able now to expand our community engagement even more by providing the region with twice as much warm weather fun with these two hallmarks of the summer calendar."

Last year's combined celebration was the first time the regatta had to cancel the water-based activities, including powerboat races. That happened because rain-swollen rivers made the events unsafe.
