Two-Alarm Fire Damages Italian Club in Monessen

MONESSEN (KDKA) -- Firefighters rushed to the scene of a fire at a local Italian Club Sunday evening.

The fire started a little after 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the Italian Club on 7th Street in Monessen.

The flames started in the kitchen and were contained to the first floor.

"We had some minor extension to the second floor," said Monessen Fire Chief Chris Rhome. "However our initial crews did a great job making a knock on the fire."

Several crews were called to help battle the two-alarm fire. No one was inside the building at the time.

"There was a Democratic committee meeting prior to the alarm coming in," said Chief Rhome. "There were still two people on the corner talking about the meeting and they noticed the smoke coming from the structure."

The Italian Society of Mutual Aid moved to its current location back in 2004. It celebrated its 100th anniversary back in 2003.

The cause of Sunday night's fire is under investigation.
