Community Shocked By McKees Rocks Deadly Hit-And-Run

MCKEES ROCKS (KDKA) -- Nikkolas Poliak, 23, recently moved to an apartment building on Vine Street in McKees Rocks with his roommate.

Friends told KDKA he was trying to turn his life around, but on Saturday, his life was taken too soon.

His landlord Karen Buzza said she was stunned by the news.

"Very quiet neighborhood, so this is very unexpected," she said. "On Sunday, I met with him, and his sister. His sister came with a truck and trailer on the back and he had all of his stuff. We signed his lease."

Buzza says Poliak moved close to the city to work as a personal trainer. He hails from Freedom in Beaver County.

Poliak's body was found on the sidewalk of the apartment along Vine Street around 8 p.m. Saturday.

The medical examiner says he died from blunt force injuries to the head.

A neighbor who didn't want to go on camera told Buzza what she saw.

"There were some kids outside and then all of a sudden there weren't any kids then the neighbor across the street saw him laying on the ground," she explained. "There wasn't any type of disturbance that they knew of."

Police don't believe the children had anything to do with the accident, but all fingers point to a car.

"This doesn't seem to be a busy street but the cars do come down here rather quickly," Buzza said.

She believes beer cans were left outside to signify a makeshift memorial. A constant reminder for those who pass by, that a young life was taken. And the driver of the car that took his life is still out there.
