Pittsburgh Police Chief Apologized Over Marathon Overtime

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Pittsburgh Police Chief Cameron McLay is apologizing for the way the bureau staffed last weekend's Pittsburgh Marathon.

In an internal memo to his officers, Chief McLay said too many of them were forced to work security on short notice.

He also said changes will be made to the way the bureau plans for big events to avoid similar problems in the future.

Mayor Bill Peduto said Tuesday night that Chief McLay has his full support.

"One of the traits you look for in a leader is to admit when they made a mistake," said Mayor Peduto, "and what the chief is doing is looking at how we staff not just major events, like marathons, but all events, whether they're city events or a neighborhood festival or a community event or even a Penguins or Steelers game."

Chief McLay was expected to hold a news conference Wednesday on police staffing, but called it off late Tuesday.
