Young Man Sentenced To 12-30 Years For 2013 Brashear H.S. Shooting

PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) – A young man who was convicted of shooting three students outside of Brashear High School in 2013 was back in court for sentencing Wednesday morning.

In February, Anjohnito Willet was found guilty of one count of attempted homicide, but acquitted of two other attempted homicide charges. He was also convicted of multiple counts of aggravated assault and reckless endangerment as well as possession of a firearm by a minor.

On Wednesday morning, he was sentenced to sentenced to 12 to 30 years in prison. The prosecution was seeking a sentence of 20-40 years.

"I feel the sentence was fair given the circumstances and the crimes alleged," said defense attorney Christopher Urbano. "My client does, at this point, maintain his innocence still and plans an appeal at this time."

Judge Jill Rangos told the court she doesn't believe in "throwing the key away when it comes to juveniles." The judge also said she hopes by the time Willet hits his 30s that he'll be mature enough to be out on the streets and safe.

Authorities alleged that Willet shot three students outside Brashear High School in November 2013, firing from a wooded area as they left school. He was 16 at the time of the shootings.

Police said Willet had been attacked in the school in October but refused to press charges, saying "I'll handle this myself."
