Squirrel Hill Service Held For Holocaust Remembrance Day

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Music, prayer and readings were all part of a ceremony at the Community Day School in Squirrel Hill.

The event was held in observance of Holocaust Remembrance Day and the six million lives lost.

The day means a lot to the head of the school Avi Baran Munro.

"I was raised by two survivors who did leave the experience finding a way to be hopeful, to be faithful, to be proud, very happy to be Americans and very grateful for the freedoms that many people take for granted," she said.

8th graders at the school organized the ceremony from start to finish. It's their chance to show their deep understanding of the Holocaust and how it happened.

"I see the vibrancy and the empowerment that this knowledge, it's not defeat, its not 'we are victims', its sort of like we own our history, we know who we are," Baran Munro said.

Two Holocaust survivors spoke at the service, sharing their terrifying experiences and how they found hope to move on.

"I'm proud to be a Jew from Bulgaria because the Bulgarian people defended the Jewish minority," survivor Albert Farhy said.

Services in remembrance of the Holocaust were held all over the world.
