Leechburg High School Set To Install Metal Detectors After Gun Incident
LEECHBURG (KDKA) -- Just weeks after a student was found carrying a loaded handgun in Leechburg High School, the Armstrong County school district is set to install metal detectors.
The school board recently gave the nod of approval to make the $7,500 purchase.
The district had no policy in place to use metal detectors, but that all changed when police say a 13-year-old boy was found in the high school with a loaded .45-caliber handgun on April 28.
"It's a little scary, but I think it's necessary," said Emilie Boehm, a freshman at the high school. "Just a thought of someone carrying a loaded weapon to school is a little scary."

Two metal detectors and two handheld scanners have already been shipped to the district.
The acting superintendent expects them to be in place before the end of the school year so that students will be accustomed to them in the fall.
"I actually think it's a good idea with everything that has happened recently, and it makes me feel a little safer having my daughter here," said one parent.
Just where the metal detectors will be placed hasn't been determined yet.
