Amur Leopard Cub Getting Used To New Surroundings At Pittsburgh Zoo

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - One of the Pittsburgh Zoo's newest and cutest additions is becoming quite adventurous.

It took a little coaching from keepers and some encouragement from mom, but the zoo's little Amur leopard cub is finally making her way outside.

"They are learning the exhibit and you'll see that the cub is just a feisty little spitfire," Curator of Mammals, Ken Kaemmerer said.

Prior to this week, the cub, who is a little over three months old, spent all of her time inside.

Now, she's checking out a whole new world. Although, she's never far away from her mom, Candy.

"She explores, as soon as mom sits down, she explores and she'll climb the cage, she'll go through the logs and do all the things little cubs are supposed to do," Kaemmerer said.

The cub will be out in the yard daily from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m.

Keepers said she seems to be adjusting well and loving the great outdoors.

Visitors are loving being able to see the zoo's first leopard cub in nearly 16 years.

The staff will be keeping a close eye on her too.

"Right now, she shows all the normal growth that a leopard cub should and with the vaccinations and monitoring, all the work that our keepers do, they'll start training her," Kaemmerer said.

Next up for the baby cub is a new name. Zoo donors will be making the decision in the very near future.
