South Park Teen Dies In Car Crash

BETHEL PARK (KDKA) -- Shane Phillips, 16, was killed in a one-car accident in the 1400 block of Stolz Road in Bethel Park early Sunday.

Phillips was a back seat passenger in a car that went out of control, took out a mailbox, slammed sideways into two trees and hit a fire hydrant before coming to rest. The accident happened in Bob Russo's front yard.

"We saw lights and somebody screaming, dialed 911 and ran out to see, a fellow was in the back seat, a passerby was tending to him, we got up close and he had severe head trauma," said Russo.

Neighbor Elizabeth Pagano said she was awakened by the crash.

"We heard the crash and we came right out because we saw the car and heard people yelling," she said.

The two people yelling were the driver and a front seat passenger who weren't injured. Russo said the driver made a startling admission.

"A fellow driving the car said he was going too fast and lost control of the car," Russo said. "We go to NASCAR races and he must have been moving pretty fast, ripped the doors off."

The names of the teens in the front seat have not been released. Shane Phillips was a sophomore at South Park High School and member of the football team. He was pronounced dead at St. Clair hospital.

"It was definitely pretty sad to see, we're very sad to see that one of the young men passed away," Pagano said.

Russo said it's the third time his property was damaged by a high speed crash along Stoltz Road. He said Bethel Park Police try to stop speeders but he admits they can't always be there.

"Dark road like this, 70, 80 miles per hour you don't have a prayer," he said.
