Historic Baseball Field Gets Renovation Thanks To Late Tech Tycoon's Foundation

MUNHALL (KDKA) -- Tech tycoon and Homestead native Bill Campbell amassed an enormous amount of wealth heading up companies in the Silicon Valley, but he never forgot his roots in the Steel Valley.

Campbell passed away in April after battling cancer.

His children and wife flew into Pittsburgh for a re-dedication ceremony of William W. Knight Memorial Field in Munhall.

The Campbell Educational and Community Foundation funded the entire $6 million project.

"I think my father would be happy to see what's going on today," said son Jim Campbell. "Not because of his own involvement, but because of what it means to this community, and what it means for years to come."

West Field, as it is commonly known, was home to the historic baseball team, the Homestead Grays.

The Campbell Foundation has provided millions of dollars for technology, recreation and academics in the Steel Valley School District as well.
