Pirates Place Vogelsong On 15-Day DL With 'Facial Fractures'

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed Ryan Vogelsong on the disabled list after a scary incident on Monday.

Vogelsong was hit in the head while batting in the second inning.

He remained down on the ground for several minutes before being carted off the field and taken to Allegheny General Hospital.

Today, the Pirates placed him on the 15-day disabled list with facial fractures.

"There is a significant amount of edema, or swelling, with and around the eye," said Pirates trainer Todd Tomczyk. "Once that calms down, once that settles down, then the multiple facial fractures will be addressed at that time."

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle says he hopes to visit Vogelsong in the hospital soon.

"I have spoken to his wife twice, Todd [Tomczyk] was over there in person today, I believe Francisco got by today, I'm hoping to get by [Wednesday] if he's still in there… keeping him overnight again tonight," said Hurdle. "But better place today than he was yesterday at this time."

The Pirates also called up A.J. Schugel from Triple-A Indianapolis to take Vogelsong's spot.
