PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Police say one man was killed in a home invasion and shooting late Tuesday night in Crafton Heights.

Thomas Cheeks, 40, was shot in the chest and pronounced dead at the scene.  Police say the suspects fatally shot a family dog before shooting Cheeks.

"We believe there were two males who entered through the rear entrance of the home," Pittsburgh Public Safety Spokeswoman Sonya Toler said. "We have a male in the home who has been fatally shot in the chest. So, this is a home invasion and homicide investigation."

Authorities says the victim's wife and 14-year-old son were home at the time of the incident, but they did not witness the shooting. They were not hurt.

The suspects got away before police arrived. Authorities are looking for them now.

Neighbors described this part of Crafton Heights as quiet and a family neighborhood.

"I was shocked. They're very nice people. They always have friends over for activities. It's just a quiet neighborhood," Patty Radcliffe

An autopsy on Cheeks is scheduled for today.
