SUV Hits McKees Rocks Gas Pump, Bursts Into Flames

MCKEES ROCKS (KDKA) -- A driver under the influence lost control of their SUV and slammed into a gas pump Sunday night in McKees Rocks.

It happened after 7 p.m. at the CoGo's on Island Avenue.

Witnesses say the SUV came off the McKees Rocks Bridge, the driver lost control and the vehicle slammed into a pump and a car parked a the pump.

"We heard this big bang. I mean, it was loud. So, we come running through her garage down in front here and this SUV was in flames. I mean, it was engulfed in flames," Bob Zanis said.

Both the SUV and the car both caught fire along with the gas pump.

"We thought the other red car that was hit was gonna explode," Bob Zanis said. "Thankfully, that car didn't explode. The fire department got here, put out the flames and everything was okay. Nobody got hurt. Nobody got killed."

Fire crews and witnesses credit the gas station employees for immediately hitting the emergency shut off to the pumps to prevent the fire from spreading.

The driver of the car that was struck was inside the CoGo's at the time of the crash.

The driver of the SUV was able to get out safely. She was taken to the hospital, but police said she's going to be okay. Her name has not been released, but she faces several charges including, DUI, careless driving and driving without a license.
