Driver Accidentally Hits Gas Pedal, Crashes Into Richland Twp. Post Office

RICHLAND TOWNSHIP (KDKA) – No one was injured but there is significant damage at a Richland Township Post Office after a driver plowed right through the building and ended up crashing through the mail sorting area.

The accident happened at the Post Office on Gibsonia Road around 11 a.m. The car jumped the curb and went through the front glass doors before coming to a stop in the sorting area.

"An old lady drove right through the building," said one witness. "She was probably too old to be driving. She went way inside."

The 82-year-old driver was not hurt in the crash, and neither was anyone else inside the Post Office.

"It's fantastic that nobody was hurt," said Karen Moody, a witness. "I'm glad to hear that. I'm really sorry that it happened."

Police believe the woman was attempting to park. She told officers that she thought her foot was on the brake. That one wrong move had her vehicle accelerating, hitting a brick wall before crashing through the workroom inside.

Dave Brakebill was at the Post Office shortly after the accident.

"Somebody hit the gas instead of the brake, which is kind of crazy. It's amazing," said Brakebill.

He said the employees were still rattled.

"They look pretty shaken up," he said. "It looks like they're just cleaning stuff up right now."
