North Versailles Karate Instructor Facing Child Sexual Assault Charges

NORTH VERSAILLES (KDKA) –A karate instructor in North Versailles is facing charges for allegedly sexually abusing a student.

According to police, Michael Scherbanic, 28, allegedly sexually assaulted a student three times from the beginning of April through mid-May.

The child and their family reported the incidents to North Versailles Police on May 26.

One incident took place during a sleepover party at the karate school at the beginning of April. In that incident, the child was allegedly told to show Shebanic their private parts or they would not be invited back.

An alleged victim also reported that Shebanic touched his private parts on three separate occasions.

Scherbanic is facing a list of charges including involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, indecent assault, endangering the welfare of a child and corruption of minors.

People in the community are stunned.

"I don't know what's going on in the world today," said Range Hardiman. "It's sad, we have people being beaten to death, we have children being assaulted in school, it's at the point of 'is church safe,' you wonder where you can send them that they would be okay."
