Hundreds Of Acres Slated To Become Pittsburgh's Biggest Park

PITTSBURGH (AP) - A developer who once planned a horse racing track, a casino, a hotel and other amenities on a 660-acre site in Pittsburgh has decided to give the land to the city for a park.

Pittsburgh Development Group II agreed to sell the land to the Urban Redevelopment Authority for $5 million, which officials say is tens of millions below the market value of the property.

The tract went undeveloped after developer Charles Betters lost his bid for a state casino license in 2006.

Redevelopment board members are expected to vote Thursday on whether to accept the land. It would become the city's largest park.

Board chairman and mayoral chief of staff Kevin Acklin calls the land a gift and says it's the largest land donation to the city in more than 100 years.
