Pittsburgh School Board To Meet Again On Superintendent

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - The Pittsburgh school board will meet on Monday to decide how to respond to the controversy surrounding newly hired superintendent Dr. Anthony Hamlet. On Tuesday, Hamlet explained data in his resume that was different than the numbers in Florida.

Since then, allegations of plagiarism were made when a description of his educational philosophy appeared to be words reportedly taken verbatim from the Washington Post.

Former school board member Jean Fink said it may be time to search for a new superintendent.

"I just feel like he's not being upfront with everybody and that's not a good way to start with the superintendent," she said.

But former school board member Randall Taylor believes Hamlet deserves a chance.

"I'm sure Mr. Hamlet is an honest, decent man or else he would not be as far along in his career. The District saw something in him they voted unanimously for him. I think that speaks very well of him and I think we need to make the punishment fit the crime," he said.

But Fink said Hamlet's actions do not set a good example for students. She blames on the head hunting agency that found him.

"You would think that anybody who took on a job like that would definitely check the information to see if everything was accurate," she said.

But Taylor questions all of the scrutiny, saying it's not a level playing field.

"There was no scrutiny of Mark Roosevelt, although he had few credentials to scrutinize, no scrutiny over him whatsoever," he said.

The board will consider all of the legal ramifications before making a decision on Anthony Hamlet's future.
