Baby Sloth, Butterflies Featured At The National Aviary

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Sky Deck bird shows have taken wing again at the National Aviary.  But this year there's something new, and a bit slower paced.  Valentino the two-toed sloth has grown a bit since he was flown to Pittsburgh four months ago.

"He weighed about one and a half pounds when he arrived, and he weighs about four and a half, five pounds now," said Aviary director Cheryl Tracy.

She also introduced a screened-in Butterfly Garden.

"It's  something  that's brand new to the Aviary this summer, and this summer only."

Education director Patricia O'Neill described as a living interactive display.

"It provides an opportunity for people to get up close with the native butterfly species here in western Pennsylvania. We're exhibiting about eleven species throughout the season."

Painted Ladies are dominant at the moment. While we were there, a Mourning Cloak emerged from its chrysalis, which is similar to a cocoon.  It's one exhibit where you can  look - and touch - gently.

"Butterflies are nectar feeders," Patricia O'Neill said.  "And so what we are providing are bowls of our own nectar.  It's a thicker nectar that's the consistency of apple sauce.  You put a little bit on your finger, and butterflies taste with their feet."

Visitors, especially children, were delighted to find that it works.
