Fans Enjoy U.S. Open Despite Mud From Recent Rain

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- If you came to the U.S. Open Friday, you could say you dodged a bullet. That is, unless you're Peter Dellapenna.

"My footing slipped and I fell down and tried to protect myself as I got my bearings.  I got up and fell second time and that was a killer," Peter Dellapenna from Lakeland, Florida said.

Dellapenna fell in a mess of mud behind the grandstand.

"I don't have change of clothes.  I avoided souvenir clothing so I don't get it ruined today," Dellapenna said.

The mud was an issue for some spectators after Thursday's rain.

"Around the back of the second tee it was a bottleneck between the crowd trying to get through and the mud. We stood for 20 minutes trying to get through," Russell Thornton from Scottsdale, Arizona said.

Over in the Red Lot at Hartwood Acres, tow trucks came to the rescue to pull cars out of the mud.

"It's muddy from the rain yesterday. It didn't really drain away. And we had one guy stuck this morning and now he's out," Parking Attendant at the Red Lot Doug Heuer said.

"We saw some folks try to make it up hill in parking lot couldn't quite do it. Spinning out quite a bit," Dan McKnight from Cranberry said.

"The blue lot was closed. We drove around for about an hour. Didn't get any communication.  It was closed and sent us out here," Peter Rizzo from Harrisburg said.

But despite some troubles, folks say they're having fun in the sunshine.

"I'm hoping I don't get hit by a golf ball because then my day would be complete," Dellapenna said.
