ASPINWALL (KDKA) — There’s a new recreation opportunity for people who prefer to paddle their way through Pittsburgh.

People loaded into kayaks on the North Shore Tuesday afternoon, enjoying the sites of Downtown Pittsburgh and The Point. Soon, Venture Outdoors will offer another location for paddlers to launch from.

“We’re really excited about that location,” says Joey-Linn Ulrich, of Venture Outdoors. “Being able to enter in Aspinwall and be able to paddle up to the Fox Chapel Yahct Club and back will be a perfect, wonderful paddle for individuals.”

The newest Kayak Pittsburgh spot is at Aspinwall Riverfront Park just off of Freeport Road. It will open this weekend after a celebration on Friday.

“It’ll run from 4 to 8 p.m., and that’s really a way for us to introduce and kick off the concession,” says Ulrich. “We’ll have free kayaking; we have a portable climbing wall that will be there.”

Talks began in May to open the kayak concession and a quick decision was made after Venture Outdoors took a field trip.

Venture Outdoors wanted to make sure Aspinwall was the perfect spot for their third location, and the only way to do that was to get on the water and test it for themselves.

“We take our staff out,” Ulrich said. “We have a wonderful group of volunteer trip leaders who have been experienced paddlers with us for a long time, to get out there and assess it and make sure it’s going to be safe for everyone to paddle.”

Venture Outdoors also has a location at the lake at North Park.

Tuesday afternoon on the North Shore, paddlers seemed excited to kayak the Allegheny River through Aspinwall.

“It’s nice. It’s convenient,” kayaker Diana Rotondo said of the new Aspinwal location. “There’s a yacht club down there, so it’ll be nice for people to get out on the water who don’t have a boat.”

“It’s awesome,” added Deanne Zatko, another kayaker. “I would go check it out just to get in another location.”
