Does It Really Do That? Slice Right

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – It is summer and we love our watermelon, but cutting it can be a real pain. A product called Slice Right claims to cut way down on the mess and the time it takes to cut and serve watermelon.

Does it Really Do That? KDKA-TV news anchor/reporter Jennifer Antkowiak received many requests to test Slice Right.

Jackie Seamen was tending bar at the Wilkins Elks when the Slice Right commercial came on.

"We were watching it on TV and a couple of our customers were like, 'Wouldn't it be nice if we got to see that on Does It Really Do That?' Because if it worked, we thought it would be a great item to have," Jackie said.

Slice Right is a double-bladed, curved cutting tool that's supposed to make it easy to cut and serve perfect watermelon slices and cubes. Jackie and her customers were rooting for it to work because they've all dealt with watermelon prep issues.

"Cutting the watermelon to begin with and then the slices, trying to get as much watermelon as you can out of the watermelon itself," Jackie said.

Jackie cut the watermelon in half with a knife like she normally would, then tried to use the Slice Right, as shown on the commercial. It was a little difficult to get the cut started, and to make a smooth cut.

"Okay, I'm kinda stuck," Jackie said after just a few seconds.

Jackie kept trying, and it did get a little easier with more practice. She did get the Slice Right to move through the watermelon, then tried to use it as a server.

The commercial says to flip the Slice Right over, and use it to lift the slice out of the melon. That worked, but there was still a lot of melon left in the rind.

She wanted to try to cube the watermelon like they show on the commercial by slicing the watermelon vertically and horizontally. As she tried, she again found it was hard to hold the watermelon in place to make the slices.

"We're having some issues," she said.

In the end, Jackie did get watermelon cubes, but they were not the perfect looking cubes shown on the commercial. Again, there was still a lot of watermelon left on the rind.

The commercial also shows you can use the Slice Right to perfectly cut and serve even cake slices. That grabbed Jackie's attention.
"My slices are just never the same size, you always have small pieces, big pieces, so I think that would be a great thing if everybody could have the same size piece of cake." she said.

Jackie gave it a try, using the same motion she did with the watermelon.

"Uh oh, I'm stuck again," she said as she continued to try to hold the cake down, while using the Slice Right.

It kept pulling the cake, and getting stuck, and the slices were not nice and neat. In fact, the more Jackie and Jen tried, the more of a mess they made!

When they tried to serve it, the cake was stuck in the Slice Right.

"We have successfully destroyed the cake," Jackie said.

So, Slice Right claims to be the new way to cut and serve watermelon, and cake with ease.

Does it really do that? Jackie says no.

"It looked so easy, but it was just not as easy as it appeared to be at all - disappointingly so."
