Death Of 6-Year-Old Fayette County Boy Under Investigation

FAYETTE COUNTY (KDKA) -- Authorities are investigating after a 6-year-old boy was pronounced dead in a Fayette County home Tuesday afternoon.

State Police and the Fayette County Coroner were called to a home at 430 Cottage Avenue in Smock. A child who lived there with his father, his dad's girlfriend, and three other children was found in a closet, unresponsive, and could not be revived.

"Right now, this is on-going investigation in regard to the 6-year-old child; there was a 911 call, where state police were dispatched," said Richard Bower, the Fayette County District Attorney.

Sources told KDKA-TV's Ralph Iannotti that besides the children who were home at the time, there were two other adults in the house along with the boy's father and step-mother. They were at the State Police Barracks for several hours where they were questioned, and then released. As of late Tuesday night, no one had been charged.

KDKA's Lisa Washington Reports:

Bower told reporters, "It's very emotional for all the parties involved, including the investigators. This is not something any of us take lightly."

Neighbors, who did not want to be identified, said off-camera they didn't know much about the family, except that they had lived on Cottage Avenue for about year and a half or so; and police had been to the home several times in the past in response to complaints.

Even though state police removed several bags of possible evidence, the District Attorney refused to describe the home as a crime scene, and was very cautious in what information he was willing to release. He refused to call it "a suspicious death," saying, "Until the investigation is complete, I'm not going to name a determination into how it happened, or what happened."
