Pine-Richland's Temporary Transgender Bathroom Rules Rejected
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - During a meeting Monday night, the Pine-Richland School Board rejected two resolutions that would have temporarily set rules regarding the use of restrooms.
According to the district, one resolution would have permitted students to use the bathroom facility of their expressed gender identity, while also accommodating students who require additional privacy with private facilities. The second resolution stated students would have had the choice of using either the facilities that correspond to their biological sex or unisex facilities.
"For several months, the Pine-Richland School Board and Staff Services Committee have been reviewing the topics of privacy, transgender youth, and potential implications for the district. This is a topic of deliberation across the country," the district said in a statement.
The school board has had five meetings about restroom policy for transgender students. In April, an informational meeting for parents, students and school board members was held at the high school.
The auditorium at the high school was filled with just under 100 people all there to learn more about the transgendered community.
The school board and administration will continue to work on developing a comprehensive policy prior to classes resuming on Aug. 24.
