Steel Coil Slams Into Home After Tractor-Trailer Crash In Hazelwood

HAZELWOOD (KDKA) -- A tractor-trailer crash shutdown the inbound side of the Glenwood Bridge early Thursday morning.

A tractor-trailer rolled onto its side just after 5 a.m. at the end of the bridge, near Ellis Way.

The driver was able to get out of the cab and appeared to be okay at the scene.

Pittsburgh Police say the driver came across the Glenwood Bridge in Hazelwood from Hays when he made a turn in the inbound lane and the steel coil flew off, barreling into the back corner of Cenythia Strothers' house.

The coil is 44,000 pounds to be exact. The damage to her foundation means her safety is compromised by staying in the home.

"They told us we have to get out I don't know for how long and I have to find somewhere else to live," she said.

Strothers, who was sleeping when it all happened, said she didn't wake up when the coil hit. Instead, she woke up to a Pittsburgh Police officer knocking at her door.

"I was woke up by a nice policeman who told me that I had to get out of my house because of something hitting the house," Strothers said. "I said, 'Really? It hit the house? I was up there sleeping.'"

The accident shut down the inbound side of the Glenwood Bridge for over three hours while crews cleared the scene.

Strothers said she doesn't know how long she'll have to stay out of her house. For the time being, she'll be with the neighbors counting her blessings.
