Report: Donald Trump To Pick Indiana Gov. Mike Pence As Running Mate

PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) – Donald Trump has chosen Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as his vice presidential running mate, sources told CBS News.

Deputy Campaign Manager Marc Lotter was on the same flight at CBS News Chief White House Correspondent Major Garrett.

Trump said he would formally announce his pick on Friday morning at an event in Manhattan, but then abruptly postponed the event after the events in Nice, France, which left dozens dead when a when a truck drove through a big crowd of people.

Pence, along with former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, were considered the top finalists for the job.

Both met with Trump in Indianapolis on Wednesday.

Gingrich told Garrett that he expected Trump to notify him of his decision later Thursday.

Pence also reserved campaign ad time for his run for governor should be be passed over for the VP job. He faces a Friday noon deadline to withdraw from the governor's race.

Local Congressman Keith Rothfus said Pence came to campaign for him in Pittsburgh when he first ran for congress.

"We had him come in in 2010 for an event for me. I never had the opportunity to serve with him because by the time I got elected in 2012 he was already governor of Indiana," he said. "He seems like a practical, solutions-oriented guy, and I think he's going to be able to bring a real balance to the ticket."

House Speaker Paul Ryan has said Indiana Gov. Mike Pence would be a good pick for Donald Trump's vice president.

Ryan says it's no secret he's a big fan of Pence's and holds him in very high regard.
