Crews Called To Two Water Main Breaks Overnight In Ross Township

ROSS TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- Water and road crews were busy early Tuesday morning with two separate water main breaks in Ross Township.

The first one happened around 1:30 a.m. on Rochester Road, between Virginia Terrace and Bellevue Avenue. A 6-inch line broke and left 12 homes without service.

Residents heard the water rushing down the street.

"I just heard a bunch of smooth running water and I just thought it was raining outside," said Edward Hammel. "Next thing I know I come out and this is like rolling down the street and washed away all the rocks on people's driveways. This is terrible."

Crews got the water shut off and closed the road between Route 19 and 6th Avenue.

About a half-hour later, another break was reported less than two miles away. This one was on Idaway Drive at Evergreen Road.

An 8-inch water main ruptured and left 28 homes without water service.

Police had to wake up a resident on Idaway Drive because his car was in jeopardy.

"I just got a knock on the door and the policeman said we have a some problems with the water.  When I come out, I saw my car, oh no water everywhere," said Fred White. "It actually looks like Niagara Falls, that's how bad it was coming."

White's car had to be towed from the scene because it wouldn't start. It's unclear if it had any water damage to the interior.

Part of Evergreen Road in the area of the break was also shutdown while crews worked to clean up the mess and fix the break.

According to West View Water Authority, all service was restored around 10:30 a.m. and all roads have reopened.
