Neighbors Help Rescue Mother, 2 Children From North Braddock Fire

NORTH BRADDOCK (KDKA) –A neighbor helped a mother and two children escape a house fire in North Braddock Friday morning.

According to emergency dispatchers, the fire broke out at a home in the 900 block of Cliff Street around 6:30 a.m.

A mother and her two children were sleeping upstairs when the fire started. A neighbor smelled smoke and alerted her husband, who ran next door to help them escape.

The children are believed to have been rescued from a back window, while the mother got out via the roof.

"They didn't want to come out of the house because their mom was still hanging out the window and coughing and stuff, so we had to coach them down," Lennie Brown said.

Brown said the young boys, both under age 10, were hesitant to crawl out of a second floor window of the home. The boys eventually jumped to safety from the window, but their mother climbed onto the roof of the porch. Firefighters said she passed out because of all the smoke and they had to use a ladder to get her down.

Brown said he was just doing the right thing.

"Just trying to get those kids and get her out of that house, and save their life, that's all," he said.

The three people inside the home were taken to a local hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is unknown and the home suffered minor damage.
