Greensburg Diocese Selling Sprawling Mansion Formerly Used By Bishops
GREENSBURG (KDKA) – A property once used by several bishops in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Greensburg has been put up for sale in Westmoreland County.
Don't bother knocking on the door at the residence of the ecclesiastical leader of Westmoreland County Catholics, the bishop's not home.
"Bishop [Edward] Malesic decided to live in the rectory of St. Paul's Parish," says Jerry Zufelt, the Greensburg Catholic Diocese spokesman.
That change of address for the bishop left the Diocese wondering what to do with the mansion. After careful consideration, the call was made to put the home on the market.
"Seven bedrooms, most all those on the second level, two-story brick Tudor I think is probably a basic description," says Zufelt. "A lot of rooms, but not these huge, large, elaborate rooms."
And, as they say in any good sale pitch - but wait there's more - gardens and a veritable botanical bonanza on the three-plus acre lot.
None of it is low maintenance.
"More than a lawn mower and you better be good with flowers," Zufelt says.
Constructed in 1924, the Diocese didn't buy the home till the 1950s. Three bishops lived there.
"Bishop [Anthony] Bosco, one of the three bishops who lived there, used to host a summer gathering for all the employees and their children," Zufelt says. "So, it's a lot of space. You never had to worry about being too crowded."
But now it's space available.
"It's a building that's served its purpose," says Zufelt. "We're looking for a relator and the relator will establish a selling price. For somebody with a lot of kids, it'd be a great place."
So say you get the keys to the estate, be advised, the taxes will run you roughly $9,000.
