1 In Custody After North Fayette Township SWAT Incident

NORTH FAYETTE TOWNSHIP (KDKA) - One person is in custody after the SWAT team was called to a situation in North Fayette Township early Monday morning.

North Fayette Township Police said they received calls that someone was breaking glass and possibly firing gunshots at the Hawthorne Estates.

When officers arrived, they saw bullet holes in the glass which prompted a standoff that lasted for hours.

The Allegheny County SWAT team was called in and tried for hours to get a 24-year-old man to surrender. He was holed up inside a third-floor apartment in the 1000 block of Hawthorne Circle.

For hours, the SWAT team fired flash bangs and gas canisters through the windows of the apartment.

After negotiators lost contact with the man, they made the decision to go inside. Eventually, the man was found hiding inside a bedroom closet. He was alone in the apartment and was not injured.

The apartment complex is filled with students from Pittsburgh Technical Institute. Those students received text alerts around 2 a.m. to stay inside their apartments until further notice.

One of those students, Daniel Stevenski, watched until the man was taken into custody.

"He was brought out in handcuffs with no pants on," Stevenski said.

During the incident, all of the residents of the building were evacuated to a community center.

Police have not released the man's name. However, they did say they have had prior incidents with him.

Charges are pending, but police said the man was not under the influence, but will undergo a psychiatric evaluation.
