Kang Bobblehead Giveaway Takes Place Despite Assault Allegations

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Fans crowded PNC Park for the third and final game in the series against the Padres.

Some have questioned the Jung Ho Kang bobblehead giveaway that took place Thursday amid the sexual assault investigation out of Chicago. But every fan KDKA spoke to said there was nothing wrong with it.

"I'm going to take it for the simple fact that it's pirate memorabilia," one man said.

"I think there's no charges, so they shouldn't be making a big deal about it until formal charges are made," said fan Patty Snyder.

News broke in early July that Chicago Police were investigating Kang for an alleged sexual assault in June. A 23-year-old woman said she met Kang through a dating app and was invited to his hotel room where she claims the assault took place. No charges have been filed.

"He hasn't done anything wrong according to the courts so let's support him," said Liz Zygomuntowicz.

"I don't think anybody should pass judgement on kang. I think he's a great ballplayer," one fan said.

Pirates spokesperson Brian Warecki, in a statement today, said in part:

We have made no alteration to the scheduled giveaway. While we have been careful not to prejudge in one direction or another, for those fans coming to today's game who feel otherwise can receive and alternate promotional item upon request.

"I have no problem with it whatsoever. He's innocent until proven guilty. He's innocent in my eyes. I support him 100-percent. Absolutely," said Calvin Blair.

As for the ongoing investigation, there have been reports that the victim may have withdrawn charges, but Chicago police refused to confirm that and said the investigation is still underway.
