Woman Accused Of Planning Kidnapping, Assault Of Boyfriend Surrenders To Police

MCCANDLESS (KDKA) -- A woman from McCandless, who allegedly planned and took part in the kidnapping and assault of her boyfriend, turned herself into police on Thursday morning.

Karrie Diaz is facing several charges, including attempted homicide, aggravated assault, making terroristic threats and more.

Diaz allegedly kidnapped and tortured her boyfriend, Thomas Markel. Police say she tied him up, punched and kicked him and then hit him with a hammer.

Joshua Flick and Justin Keller - both of Blair County - are also facing charges in the case.

According to police, Markel said someone approached him while he was walking to his car, hit him from behind and knocked him out. Markel was leaving a bar on East Ohio Street at the time.

When Markel woke up, he told police he was tied to a chair in his home. Markel says someone then untied him and beat him up. Eventually, he passed out.

Markel says, Diaz, Flick and Keller continued to assault him for a week.

Markel also told police he heard Diaz saying, "You're going to have to kill him."

Markel tried to escape through a third story window, but failed.

He then told police Flick and Keller drove him to UPMC Passavant hospital and told staff there that he had been attacked by a group of men. Diaz later showed up at the hospital, too.

Officials at the hospital say Markel had a broken pelvis, broken nose, chipped vertebrae, swollen eye and several bruises.

After Flick, Keller and Diaz left, Markel told police about the incident. Markel also told police he had a $400,000 life insurance policy which names Diaz as the beneficiary.
