Donora Residents Dealing With Aftermath Of Tornado

DONORA (KDKA) - A tornado touched down in the middle of a storm late Wednesday afternoon in Donora.

Trees were toppled and the roof of a building was blown off.

While the tornado was only classified as an EF0, it's little consolation for the people whose homes were damaged.

The National Weather Service said the tornado made a one-mile track through Donora. Some homes and businesses were damaged and a massive tree was brought down along Castner Avenue.

Cleanup in Donora began early Thursday morning.

"I saw everything flying. I saw garbage cans and tree limbs and everything," John Vetoski said. "I knew something was going to happen, like a tornado. I never heard anything like it or saw anything like it."

Some people walked around town to see the damage. Charlotte Durka stayed home, while toppled trees in her yard were cleared.

"We can actually see some of the yard today, we couldn't even see any of the yard over there yesterday," Durka said.

Donora Mayor Don Pavelko said he was across town when the storm hit. He returned home to find his grill at the bottom of the pool and a portion of his fence lying on the ground.

The pool party he had planned for Thursday will have to be rescheduled.

"No pool party today, 'cause I got a fence in the middle of my pool and a grill at the bottom," he said.

It's estimated the tornado came through Donora in about two minutes. It will take residents quite some time to clean up the damage left behind.

Fortunately, there weren't any injuries associated with the storm.
